Rajasthan Royals (RR) were the winners of the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League in 2008. The franchise has always adopted a policy of nurturing young talents and giving them an opportunity to leave an impression on the big stage. This was one of the primary reasons why Rajasthan Royals decided to appoint Sanju Samson as their captain for the IPL 2021 season.

After a poor season in 2020 under the captaincy of Steve Smith, the franchise decided to change things for good. The Australian batsman was released by the club ahead of the IPL 2021 auction, which raised quite a few eyebrows. Rajasthan have plenty of talent in their squad, with a mix of overseas stars and Indian youngsters.

Andrew Tye won the Purple Cap in 2018

Andrew Tye won the Purple Cap with Punjab Kings in the 2018 season, where he picked up 24 wickets. However, a poor outing in the 2019 season, limited his chances last year as well. The 34-year old Australian played just one game last year and was on the bench for most part of the season.

Although, Jofra Archer is ruled out for the opening few matches, yet Mustafizur Rahman is expected to get the nod over Tye. When Archer comes back into the playing eleven, the Australian pacer will fall further below in the pecking order. When the entire RR squad is fit, the four overseas spots have already been filled.

David Miller

David Miller

David Miller is coming on the back of a scoring two consecutive half centuries against Pakistan in the ODI Series. The South African could get just one match last season, where he was dismissed for a duck, after he ran himself out. The left-hander is an experienced batsman, scoring 1850 runs in his 80 matches at an average of 33.63.

The 31-year old’s best run of form, came in three seasons from 2013-2015, where he consistently scored above 300 runs for Punjab Kings. His highest tally of runs in an IPL season came in 2014, when he scored 446 runs at an average of 44.60. However, with the likes of Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes almost certain to feature in the playing eleven, Miller’s chances of breaking into the team are very slim. Rajasthan Royals are expected to play at least two overseas bowlers, which leaves no room for the left-hander.

Mayank Markande

Mayank Markande did not play a single game last year

Mayank Markande burst onto the scene during the IPL 2018 season, where he picked up 15 wickets in his 14 matches. The leg-spinner was considered to rival the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav for a place in the Indian team. However, Markande has seen a huge dip in his form since then, playing just three matches in IPL 2019. Moreover, last season, he did not feature in a single game for the Royals, which was a harsh decision by the team management.

Rajasthan Royals already have the likes of Rahul Tewatia and Shreyas Gopal in their team, both of whom are leg-spinners. This makes it even more difficult for Mayank Markande who will spend majority of the season on the bench once again. However, expect him to get a few chances to prove his worth this year.
