Easily one of the best fielders going around, Aiden Markram has showcased his athleticism once again in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In the opening game of the tournament, having not scored a lot of runs to defend, South Africa needed a wonderous effort from their bowlers and fielders to get over the line, and Markram embodied the spirit they needed.

Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell were proving to be dangerous, and they added a crucial partnership for the 4th wicket. Anrich Nortje was brought back to give their side a breakthrough, and he was hit for a boundary at cow-corner. There was a huge gap between the midwicket and long-on fielder, which persuaded Smith to hit in that gap once again.

Nortje’s short delivery had just enough pace to rush into Smith, and the batter did not get the direction he wanted. He managed to hit it well wide of the long-on fielder, but Aiden Markram at long-on ran towards the ball like a superman, times his jump to perfection and picked up a marvelous catch.

He was horizontally in the air when he managed to pick the catch. It was the exact pick-me-up moment South Africa needed and they managed to make a game out of nothing.

Here’s the video of that stunning grab from Aiden Markram

South Africa batted quite poorly in the first innings, losing wickets at regular intervals and not building any momentum. Their struggle was evident, and could only manage 118 runs with the bat eventually. Markram was the highest run-scorer for the Proteas, scoring 40 runs in 36 balls. For the Aussies, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood picked up 2 wickets each.

Even the men in yellow were unable to get going with the bat instantly, with Rabada and Nortje picking up early wickets to keep them in the game. Markram’s catch broke a crucial partnership and keeps their side in the game.
