WATCH: Umpire Aleem Dar ducks to avoid being hit by Pollard’s shot, nearly gets hit by throw from other side

Senior umpire Aleem Dar was at the center of a hilarious incident during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup game between West Indies and South Africa. In the final over the game, with West Indies looking to accelerate the scorecard in the presence of their skipper Kieron Pollard and experienced campaigner Dwayne Bravo, the former was dismissed via a sensational fieldset from Quinton de Kock.

The Proteas skipper set a fielder on the edge of the 30-yard circle, and was placed exactly behind the umpire. Pollard’s tendency to go down the ground was exploited by the men in green, and the West Indian skipper fell in the trap as per plan. He smashed Dwaine Pretorius down the ground and Rassie van der Dussen grabbed a smart catch. However, Aleem Dar, who was positioned at the bowler’s end, had a couple of scary moments.

Pollard’s straight-as-an-arrow shot nearly took the Pakistani umpire, but he was quick enough to duck and escape. While he remained situated on the ground, having a laugh about it, Dussen too mistimed his throw to the bowler after taking the catch, which went just over the umpire’s head. He had to work hard to get out of the ball’s way once again, and the South African fielder rushed in to apologize.

The 53-year-old umpire is one of the senior-most officials in world cricket, having been in the middle more than any other umpire in international history. It might not be the first time he had to shuffle across quickly to save himself from the wrath of the swiftly moving ball, but he’ll have to think for a long time to recollect an incident similar to this.

West Indies managed 143 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their 20 overs. Evin Lewis chipped in with a half-century for the South African contingent, whilst Pollard came in handy with his 20-ball 26 cameo. Dwaine Pretorius was the pick of the bowlers in the first innings, picking 3 wickets for just 17 runs in his 2 overs.
