Promising young West Indies speedster Alzarri Joseph made a prized scalp, dismissing the mighty Chris Gayle when he was just starting to gain flow and make an impact in the CPL 2021 encounter this Saturday (September 4).

In a brief but gripping passage of play, Joseph, the tall paceman, got Gayle out edging a well-directed bouncer through to the keeper.

Playing for St Lucia Kings against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, one of Caribbean’s most talented speedster got big fish in trouble with a short-pitched delivery, which he could only nick behind.

Alzarri Joseph removes Chris Gayle after being hit for sixes

What made the wicket ball more special is what happened before it. Batting No.3 for SKNP, Gayle had just blazed Alzarri Joseph for a couple of sixes.

The first one, struck on the 3rd ball of the third over of his team’s difficult run-chase, saw Gayle top-edging a pull stroke off a delivery from Joseph over the fine-leg boundary.

The next one was a dot ball, as Gayle could hit his attempted slog to only as far as the mid-on fieldsman.

On the following delivery, the experienced left-hander preempted another short ball from the right-arm quick and slammed it for a flat six through the mid-wicket region.

Shuffling a bit towards the line of the delivery, Gayle struck another maximum of brute power, with the pace on the ball from Joseph only helping him time it brilliantly.

Recognising Gayle’s form and intent, Alzarri Joseph had to try and send him back to the pavilion. And this is when the wicket ball arrived.

Bowling almost the same line but with more effort and speed through the air and off the deck, the pacer gave the batsman no time to make any shuffle on this occasion even as he opened up to aim for another maximum.

The ball seemingly got too big on Gayle and he could only fend it to the gloves of the wicketkeeper Andre Fletcher.

The timely breakthrough provided by Alzarri Joseph helped Kings control the rest of the game as they eventually won by a massive margin of 100 runs, comfortably defending their gigantic total of 224/2.
