Probable Barbados Royals Playing XI for CPL 2021

Two-time champions, Barbados Royals will be aiming for redemption in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2021. Royals, who finished fifth in the six-team points table last season with just three wins from ten league games, have the chance to stand resurrected and once again reclaim the prestigious trophy.

Winners in the 2014 and 2019 seasons, Royals will look to forget the struggles of last CPL and make a fresh start, having also gone through a name transformation from Barbados Tridents to Barbados Royals heading into the competition.

The Royals have had two major changes to their squad for this season, with Chris Morris and Shafiqullah Gafari going out and Glenn Phillips and Jake Lintott coming in. But making up a playing XI from what is a squad of some talented personnel will certainly be a challenge for skipper Jason Holder & co. Here’s an effort to ease their headache.

Jason Holder is the captain of Barbados Royals.

What could be the Barbados Royals Playing XI for CPL 2021?

1. Johnson Charles (wk)

After a disappointing run last year where he struck only 214 runs from his ten innings at an average of 21.40 and strike-rate of 115.05, Charles will be hoping to get back to his best this summer and produce the level of consistency and explosiveness expected of him at the top of the order.

2. Glenn Phillips

If there is one name that has quickly gained prominence in the T20 circuit over the last few years, it is that of New Zealand’s aggressive right-hand batsman Glenn Phillips. Phillips has been in excellent form in the shortest version of the game and was only second from the top in the CPL 2020 batting charts.

3. Shai Hope

Easily one of the most talented batters to have come out of Caribbean cricket in the last four-five years, Shai Hope, hasn’t quite fulfilled that promise yet. Hope could manage only 118 runs from his eight innings in CPL 2020. But he if finds his form and rhythm, the right-hander can be a useful anchor for Barbados Royals at No.3.

4. Azam Khan

Azam Khan, Pakistan’s bright young talented batsman, is one of the latest entrants into Barbados’ camp for the CPL 2021. Son of former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Moin Khan, Azam has been signed up by the CPL franchise after his promising exploits in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the Lanka Premier League (LPL).

5. Kyle Mayers

The world came to know of Mayers because of his memorable fourth-innings double hundred in a rare successful Test run-chase in Chattogram against Bangladesh earlier this year. The aggressive left-hand batsman and useful part-time seam bowler can be pretty effective when he is in form. Mayers was his team’s top run-getter in CPL 2020 with 222 runs from nine innings, albeit at an average of 24.66 and strike-rate of only 111.55.

6. Jason Holder (c)

A lot will depend on the all-round prowess and the able leadership qualities of skipper Holder as far as the Barbados Royals are concerned. Holder was one of his team’s better performers with both bat and ball last season, scoring 192 runs at a strike-rate of 140.14 and taking 10 wickets with an economy rate of 6.63.

7. Thisara Perera

Sri Lankan all-rounder Perera could prove to be a valuable addition to the Barbados Royals’ line-up for the CPL 2021. Perera can hit the long ball when required and also produce some handy right-arm seam bowling. Nearly 300 games into his long T20 career, Perera has taken 247 wickets while going for 8.61 runs per over and has had a strike-rate of 150.22 for 3,736 runs.

8. Hayden Walsh

Wristspinner Walsh will be crucial to Royals’ chances as well. He did not have the best of campaigns last summer, taking only seven wickets from his ten matches at an economy rate of 7.65. But Walsh can prove to be a game-changer for Royals if he finds accuracy and consistency to go with his leg-spin threat.

9. Ashley Nurse

Nurse, the off-spinner who is also a capable lower-order batsman, is another of Royals’ important players. Nurse had a poor season with the bat last season – only 107 runs from his nine innings at a strike-rate of 109.18 – but he made up for that to some degree with the ball, giving away runs at only 5.76 per over.

10. Mohammad Amir

Bidding a premature adieu to the international game last winter, Pakistan fast bowler Amir is now fully committed to the leagues around the world. The left-arm pacer can be a lethal prospect for opposition batting units at his best. Amir boasts of a fine overall T20 record to his name, with 224 wickets from 201 games at an economy rate of 7.20.

11. Oshane Thomas

Known for his pace through the air and off the deck, Thomas can be a difficult bowler to get away if he can nail the hard lengths consistently. Sadly, though, the tall right-arm paceman has hardly ever been able to do that in his career so far. He has an economy rate of 9.16 in T20Is for West Indies, which is only slightly better than 9.32 – his overall T20 career economy rate. Thomas, however, still has a lot of promise about him and could be backed by the Royals’ camp for a run of games in CPL 2021.
