Virat Kohli was sent off by the jam-packed Headingley crowd with the “cheerio” song on Day 1 of the third Test against England. The home team’s dedicated fan group ‘Barmy Army’ tried to rub salt into the wounds of the Indian captain following another cheap dismissal of his by singing him off the pavilion.

Kohli got out after making just 7 runs during his painstaking 17-ball stay at the crease, being forced into edging an attempted drive outside off by his longstanding rival and England’s fast bowling great James Anderson.

This added to the procession of underwhelming scores that the modern-day batting giant has had in the ongoing series, having gotten out for 0, 42 and 20 at Trent Bridge and Lord’s.

Barmy Army had a go at Virat Kohli after his dismissal at Headingley.

Virat Kohli gets sledged by ‘Barmy Army’ in Leeds

As soon as Virat Kohli got out and reached near the boundary ropes, he was given a send-off by a section of the ‘Barmy Army’ fans with words “cheerio”, “cheerio” – partying goodbyes.

Kohli’s early departure further weakened India’s position after opting to bat first upon winning the toss. On a surface offering decent amount of seam movement for the pacers with some disconcerting bounce, India backed their batters to play through the difficult early couple of hours and post a big total on the board. But the visitors moved to lunch at 58/4 and soon collapsed to just 78 all out.

That only got the English crowd and the ‘Barmy Army’ involved more as they were right behind their team and gave Indian players a hard time on the field.

To think of Kohli alone, the crowd jeering is not the only time this fan group went after the Indian batting maestro and captain. On their Twitter handle, they also took a jibe at him for words spoken to Anderson in the previous Test at Lord’s and also questioned if Kohli would be rethinking his decision at the toss.

India need Virat Kohli to give a befitting response with the bat to all these talks around him if they are to put up a better collective effort in the second innings and the rest of the England tour.
