WATCH: Cameroon women’s bowler effects four Mankad dismissals in same innings

In the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup Africa Region Qualifiers, Cameroon bowler Maeve Douma inflicted a staggering 4 Mankad dismissals and captured the attention of the Cricketing world. With the world still tangling on either side of the morality line over this kind of dismissal, this incident on Sunday afternoon in the capital of Botswana, Gaborone is only going to cause further outrage and debate.

Batting first, Uganda registered a towering 190 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. Rita Musamali chipped in with a 40-ball 59, and some decent contributions came from the likes of Prosscovia Alako and Kevin Awino. Despite their middle order not chipping in with any major runs, they got themselves to a brilliant total, but the major talking point was something else.

Maeve Douma, who chipped in with figures of 1/32 in her 4 overs, first ran out Kevin Awino after she registered a 100-run partnership with Musamali. The scorecard read 153/2 and on the final ball of the same over (16th), she ran Musamali out the same way. Captain Immaculate Nasikuuyi and Janet Mbabazi were the other victims, both of them at the receiving end of this dismissal in the 20th over.

Cameroon got bowled out for a paltry 35 runs in 14.3 overs, handing a huge 155-run win for the Uganda women. Consylate Numungu picked up three wickets for Uganda, conceding just 4 runs in her 4 overs, which included 3 maiden overs.

Moral debates continue to hover around the Mankad dismissals

However, this incident is bound to cause plenty more debates in the coming days. While Ravichandran Ashwin did suggest an alternate option for this scenario, to implement this in the near future looks highly unlikely as the Cricketing world remains divided on the moral side of the Mankad dismissals.

Ravi Ashwin was himself at the receiving end of some serious criticism when he ran out Jos Buttler in an IPL game in 2019. While many point out that a dismissal that is not deemed within the “Spirit of the game” shouldn’t be existing legally, there are plenty who bat for the Mankad dismissals to be a part of the game.
