The scenic ground of Trent Bridge has witnessed multiple rain-delays in the ongoing first Test of India’s highly anticipated five-match series against England.

Ever since the notorious English weather first started playing spoilsport in the Test on Day 2 afternoon, fans have had to endure frustrating breaks for bad light, wet outfield, elongated drizzles that have relented for only a couple of deliveries before coming back again.

Either side of one such break in the first session on Day 3 this Friday (August 6), we saw some amusing gamesmanship from both sides. While one was evidently keen to continue despite the rain, the other was hoping for the umpires to offer them respite.

Having just resumed play at the beginning of the 50th over in the Indian first-innings, the rain threatened to lead to another disappointing stoppage.

As the weather got gloomier and the drizzle heavier, standing Indian batsmen KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant started looking at the umpire and checked if they should walk off.

But the mood on the England side was one of complete contrast, as the home team players just stood their ground having seen that drizzle had started to lighten up in a matter of seconds.

Funny few moments followed on the field, where Rahul looked eager for things to be brought to a halt but England pacer James Anderson and the umpire quickly intervened and made sure that the play resumed.

While Rahul was batting on 58 not out at the time, it was understandable why the Indian opening batsman was hoping for some respite in the form of a rain delay. Trailing England’s 183, the tourists had slipped from 97/0 to 133/4 and were under the pump. With the ball swing and seaming prodigiously on the surface on Nottingham and England gaining ascendency, KL Rahul was hoping for the bad weather to break their momentum.

Unfortunately for him and India, though, the heavy drizzle turned into a thin sprinkle in the matter of seconds and then faded away completely, allowing the play to resume. Only four balls later, Rahul’s in-form batting partner Pant got out mistiming a drive to the close-in fieldsman.
