Former West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in UAE, opened up about their side’s horrible performance in the tournament. West Indies, who entered the tournament as defending champions, ended up winning just 1 out of the 5 games and were knocked out in the Super 12 stages.

One of the major talking points before the tournament started was the presence of Chris Gayle in the side and the absence of some other renowned stars.

Bravo revealed during an interview with “Zone” that Gayle was in tears during the T20 World Cup and the pressure surmounted around him was so significant, he could not perform well.

“We wanted to remain tight and make sure we help each other. I remember Chris spoke to us before the game (against Australia), he was in tears as it was his last big moment after playing for 21 years. It was the biggest stage and he wanted to do well.

The pressure with which he went into the World Cup, we all feel it for him. The entire squad wanted him to do well. He was under so much pressure that he was able to be himself because he had to prove a point despite what he achieved,” Dwayne Bravo said.

The 38-year-old also added that skipper Kieron Pollard did not have the players he wanted and despite not getting off to a good start, there was hope in the dressing room that they could do well in the tournament.

“We did not do justice to our talent and we got knocked out. Someone like a Sunil Narine was always going to be a miss. I don’t think it’s fair to say Polly (Pollard) had the exact team that he wanted. In spite of not starting well, I felt we had what was needed to get the job done. I did not expect that a team with so much experience to struggle with the bat for so long,” Dwayne Bravo added.

West Indies won just one match during the mega event and finished second last in the group of six teams.
