Dav Whatmore appointed as Nepal’s new head coach

Dav Whatmore has been appointed as the new head coach of the Nepal Cricket Team on Thursday. Whatmore has been appointed as the head coach to help Nepal qualify for the ICC T20 World Cup, 2022. Nepal failed to qualify for the ICC World T20 Cup to be held in India, next year.

“Dave [sic] is extremely keen to take on this new challenge, as he strongly believes Nepal has great talent and a very bright future in international cricket,” said a press release by the Nepal Cricket Association. “Nepal is a beautiful country and Dave is looking forward to this new challenge with young talent in Nepal.”

Whatmore has coached national sides like Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The position of the head coach of Nepal was vacant ever since Umesh Patwal stepped down in February this year.

Dav Whatmore has achieved good amount of success as a coach. He guided the Sri Lankan Cricket team to the World Cup in 1996. He served two tenures as the head coach of the Sri Lankan team. His first stint was from 1995-97 where he won the 50 over World Cup, and his second stint came from 1999-2003.

Whatmore also guided the Bangladeshi team, led by Habibul Bashar to the Super Eight stage in ICC World Cup 2007 in West Indies. One of their most historic victories came against India in the Group stage match. Later in the Super Eights, they defeated South Africa. He served as the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders for two seasons, in 2010 and 2011. He guided Kerala to their maiden Ranji trophy title in the 2018-19 season.

His last coaching stint came with the Zimbabwe national team that lasted only two years from 2014-2016. He was also the head coach of Pakistan from 2012-14.
