WATCH: Emergency sees ambulance land on ground; County game halted

An unforeseen emergency in Bristol saw an air ambulance land on ground, halting the County Championship game for a while. Gloucestershire and Durham were playing in the division two game at the County Ground in Bristol. Among a series of bizarre events that have been witnessed on the cricketing field over the years, this has to be up there among the weirdest.

With just five deliveries bowled in the game, the ambulance was found landing itself on the practice pitches. The players started to leave the ground having watched the ambulance trying to descend its way onto the ground. The commentators were left perplexed but a confirmation was later provided by  the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC), who said the patient had fallen and had a head injury.

A spokesperson for GWAAC said, as quoted by BBC: “The team was on the way back to their airbase after responding to another call-out in Bridgwater, with a critical care doctor and two specialist paramedics on board, so landed at the nearby Bristol County Grounds in order to get to the patient quickly. They assisted the patient on scene, who was then taken to hospital in a land ambulance for further care.”

The little interruption seemed to have not dented the concentration of the hosts Gloucestershire, who bowled terrifically right after the play was resumed. They bowled out for just 140 runs, Zafar Gohar picking up a five-fer and Graeme van Buuren picking three wickets. Alex Lees was the only notable run-scorer for Durham, who scored 40 runs for his side.

Van Buuren chipped in with a good contribution with the bat as well, scoring a half-century and got dismissed for 62. Durham had managed a good start prior to that and his half-century dented their hopes of getting a lead. They finished with 146/6 at stumps, taking a slender 6-run lead.
