BCCI announces schedule for England’s tour of India, 2021

International Cricket will return to India once again as England will tour India in February next year for a four match test series, five match T20I series and a three match ODI series.

Chennai, Pune and Ahemdabad are the only three venues where the matches will be played. Chennai and Ahemdabad will be the host to two test matches each and all T20 internationals will be played at the new 110,000 seater Motera stadium.

The third test match will be a day-night affair at the Motera Stadium and will only be the second day night test to held in India after the first one was against Bangladesh in 2019. The English side was scheduled to play five test matches, three T20Is and three ODIs this year itself, but the tour had to be postponed owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

England will begin their Indian tour, just mine days after the second test match against Sri Lanka in Galle. Meanwhile, India will make a return to international cricket after their long tour of Australia ends in January. Virat Kohli who has been granted a paternity leave is expected to be back for the England series.

India to play first bilateral series at home after Covid pandemic

“The BCCI prioritises health and safety of both teams and will leave no stone unturned to make sure that the tour is held adhering to all safety protocols agreed by the BCCI and ECB medical teams,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said.

“Both Boards have worked closely to put together an exciting series that promises to provide high octane action between two powerhouses of world cricket. This will be India’s first bilateral series at home since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic and the home season will bring back joy to cricket fans.”

ECB CEO Tom Harrison added: “We have been delighted with the planning that has been undertaken by the BCCI to ensure the three venues in Chennai, Ahmedabad and Pune will be ready to host international cricket in a bio-secure environment and look forward to working closely with them over the coming weeks to finalise those plans.”

“The prospect of becoming the first international side to play at the magnificent Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad adds an extra dimension to the tour and I know will be something that is a highlight for both the players and management.”
