Played in the honour of former skipper Charlotte Edwards, England women’s regional T20 tournament kicks off this summer on Saturday (June 26). The tournament was renamed after Edwards only recently as a mark of respect for her great services to the English women’s game.

Edwards played England women’s maiden T20 International back in 2004 against New Zealand and remains her country’s highest run-maker in the shortest version. The 41-year-old had an illustrious career for England, featuring 23 Tests, 191 ODIs and 95 T20Is with close to 10,000 runs at the highest level.

“It’s a huge honour to have my name attached to the competition,” Edwards was quoted as saying by The Cricketer. “The regional players who’ll take part in the competition are at the beginning of such an exciting journey, and the pathway has progressed and developed so far since I was in their position.”

The ECB’s decision to rename the England women’s regional T20 after Edwards was similar in line to their call last year when the 50-over regional event was named after Rachael Heyhoe Flint.
