Glenn Maxwell aims to nail down all-rounder’s spot in ODI team

Glenn Maxwell is set to feature in his first international fixture in almost a year, after taking a break from the sport last October. He has stated that he wants to add value to his all-rounder’s tag, by performing with the ball and taking the pressure of the pacers and spinner.

Maxwell. who had a stint for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, his first competitive Cricket tournament after returning from the break, said, “I’ve done a lot of work on my bowling in that time away, trying to be that genuine allrounder where I can bowl upwards of six, seven, eight overs a game to really take the load off the quicks and the front-line spinner if we do play one.

“To go back to that 2015 year when I was the sole spinner and I was relied heavily upon, to be able to get back that string to my bow where I’m bowling a lot of consistent overs and helping the team out wherever I can.

“I certainly haven’t played a lot of one-day cricket recently. I’m just looking forward to getting back out there in the colours and performing as well as I can in whatever role I’m given. I’m confident in the skills work that I’ve done in the off-season and I’m ready to go.”

The Australian selection committee also had the same in mind, as they picked Maxwell over D’arcy Short due to the former being a more frontline spinner than the other.

Given the fact that Maxwell has also been conveyed about his role, he feels that he has improved on planning and choosing his moment. “(I have been) Really working with Aaron Finch and the coaching staff with my role in the side and committing to that 100 per cent every time. It’s going to be more of a finishing role this time.

“And to have the confidence from Finch and the coaching staff that I can perform in that role is great. I’ve been away from the game for a while now and to come back and have that backing is awesome. I just hope I can do it as well as I can.”

Australia’s tour of England commences with the 3-match T20I series in Southampton, starting from the 4th of September, following which the two teams will travel to Manchester for three ODIs from September 11.
