‘You know he’s going to turn it around’ – Glenn Maxwell backing David Warner to shine at the T20 World Cup

“You know he’s going to turn it around”. Glenn Maxwell has come out in defence of experienced Australian opener David Warner amid talks of his extended rough patch and decline ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021.

After going through a horror IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Warner also had a disappointing outing in Australia’s first warm-up game for the marquee ICC event.

The 34-year-old got out for a first-ball duck against New Zealand at the Tolerance Oval in Abu Dhabi on Monday (October 18), edging the ball to Martin Guptill who took a stunning one-handed grab.

This, after having only made only 195 runs from his eight innings of IPL 2021 at a strike-rate of 107.73. Warner was sacked as captain by SRH near the end of the Indian leg of the tournament and was twice dropped from the playing XI as well.

David Warner had a poor IPL 2021 with SRH.

But unlike the SRH camp, there is no loss of trust in Warner’s capabilities within the Australian dressing room, as Maxwell said giving up on “Davey” is a big “no-no”.

“If you ever doubt Davey, it’s an absolute no-no. You know he’s going to turn it around,” the in-form Aussie batter was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

“He’s a superstar of all three formats. He’s made so many runs. He’s going to go down as one of the greats of the game. Unfortunately, he got Martin Guptill’d yesterday with an absolute hanger. Gup seems to do that a lot against us.”

“Those sorts of things happen when you’re searching for it. But you know when he gets out there come game time, come the 23rd [of October], regardless of what happens in the next practice game, you know he’s going to hit the ground running. He’s going to be a big player for us,” Maxwell added.

Unlike Warner, Maxwell has been in stellar form since the beginning of the IPL earlier this year. The aggressive right-hander struck 513 runs from his 15 innings for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) with an average of 42.75 and strike-rate of 144.10.

But while Maxwell himself is expected to have a big impact on Austalia’s fortunes – at times with the ball, too – there is another allrounder in the side that he believes could have a “massive tournament” as well.

That player is Mitchell Marsh, who has suddenly risen into a pivotal No.3 within the Aussie set-up. The top-order powerhitter with decent fast bowling capability didn’t have the best of first warm-up matches against the Kiwis – scoring a 15-ball 24 but also giving away 53 off his 4 overs – but Maxwell hinted that is no cause of worry around him for the team from Down Under.

“I think Mitchell Marsh is going to have a massive tournament. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone hit the ball better, ever. We all gather around his net and just watch him hit the ball. It’s been pretty extraordinary to watch him go about his business at the moment,” Maxwell said.

“I’d be really surprised if he didn’t have a really good tournament. He’s got his bowling as well. His presence around the group regardless of what he’s doing is second to none. He’s the guy everyone wants in their team, he’s flying at the moment, so I’m expecting him to have a good tournament,” he concluded.
