‘She smacked me out of the attack’ – Glenn Maxwell reveals history with Meg Lanning

Australian batter Glenn Maxwell has revealed his historic connection with national women’s team skipper Meg Lanning, stating how she once “smacked” him during a junior domestic game while they were both gradually progressing along in their journies.

In an interview for ‘Channel 7’ with former Australia pacer Daniel Fleming, Maxwell spoke in rich praise of Lanning, who has been a mighty successful captain for the Aussie women’s side, having overseen victories in 54 of the 63 ODIs, 58 of the 78 T20Is and won one, drawn the other of her 2 Tests at the helm.

Lanning has played 4 Tests, 88 ODIs and 110 T20Is in her mighty successful career. The 29-year-old right-hand batter has made 3,984 runs at an average of 53.12 and strike-rate of 93.17 in ODIs and 2,914 runs at a strike-rate of 115.63 and average of 35.97.

But before Meg Lanning became the great Meg Lanning, she had her path interestingly crossing with that of a young Glenn Maxwell, who revealed how she absolutely took his off-spin apart and gave him an early example of her class and ability.

Glenn Maxwell gives account of high-school tryst with Meg Lanning

Glenn Maxwell talked in rich praise of Meg Lanning, recalling an encounter from high-school days where she went after him with the bat.

“Yeah, she is an absolute superstar,” Maxwell told Fleming. “We’re lucky enough to have her back at Stars (Melbourne Stars in WBBL). I actually played against her when she was in high school. I was actually playing ‘crusaders’ and she was in year ten, but was asked to play in the year 11-12 boys’ side.”

Maxwell recounted how he initially felt easy at the prospect of bowling to a young girl in high school when he himself was an established U-19 state cricketer. But his confidence quickly turned into shock and awe, as Lanning went after him and forced his skipper to take the ball out of his hands.

“I had to bowl to her and I was like ‘I am an U-19 state cricketer, what’s going on? And she absolutely crunched me and smacked me everywhere; smacked me out of the attack.”

“From that day, I have never ever underestimated Meg Lanning ever again,” he concluded.
