One of the lasting memories from India’s heartwarming come-from-behind win at Lord’s will be the delivery that ace quick Jasprit Bumrah bowled to dismiss Ollie Robinson.

Just as the resilient England lower-order batter was beginning to prove a flesh in the thone in India’s quest towards victory, Bumrah sent him back for the score of 9 after having faced 35 balls.

The determined right-hander had gone about resolutely through his innings and stitched a rearguard stand of admirable defence and patience with Jos Buttler until then.

But Jasprit Bumrah broke his resistance, showing his great skill and nous under pressure. Seeing that the batter is playing out most of the deliveries from over the wicket angle with relative comfort, Bumrah tried the other angle to disturb his concentration and flow.

Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Ollie Robinson with a great delivery in the closing stage of the Lord’s Test.

The moment Bumrah went round the wicket, Robinson started anticipating the bouncer and had his weight hanging back at the crease. Spotting the batter’s nerves, Bumrah delivered a special off-cutter that hit the batsman’s back-pad halfway to the height of the stumps from an unorthodox angle.

Even though on-field umpire Richard Illingworth didn’t give Robinson out, India got their man via a DRS review, taken after a quick discussion between Bumrah and skipper Virat Kohli. Bumrah seemingly told the captain that the ball is pitching in line with the stumps. The review vindicated that and Illingworth was forced to change his decision.

But while the game resumed seamlessly from there on, something rare took place on the hawkeye ball-tracking replay. Even as the delivery from Jasprit Bumrah pitched straight in line with the middle-stump before going on to hit Robinson’s back-pad, the hawkeye showed the ball to be landing just a sniff inside the leg-stump line.

It was one of those rare glitches that could’ve made a telling difference in the outcome of the game. Had the ball-tracking technology showed the ball to be hitting even an inch more towards the leg-stump, the DRS would’ve stayed with the on-field ‘umpire’s call’ and Robinson would have been not out.
