South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir produced an astonishing bowling performance on Monday as he registered a hat-trick against Welsh Fire playing for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred. In the process, he also went on to complete a five-wicket haul, which was also the second such instance in this competition.

Batting first, Birmingham Phoenix rode on Will Smeed and Moeen Ali’s fifties to post a daunting total of 184/5 on the board. Such a steep target put pressure on the Welsh Fire batting unit from the very beginning. Adam Milne and Benny Howell made early in-roads into the Fire batting unit as they dismissed Tom Banton and Ben Duckett cheaply.

Tahir wreaked havoc thereafter as he claimed the wickets of Glenn Phillips and Leus du Plooy — two of their best batters — in the same set of five.

His next three wickets, which completed the hat-trick, were also the last three wickets of the Fire batting lineup. It was Qais Ahmed who was out caught at Long off trying to go for a big shot. Matt Milnes was trapped lbw next off a googly and David Payne got completely bamboozled after that as Tahir cleaned him up with another well disguised wrong ‘un.
