Umesh Yadav, who has been out of the Indian squad since injuring his calf during the second Test against Australia in Melbourne, will undergo a fitness test on Sunday which will determine whether he will play ahead of Mohammed Siraj for the third Test or not.

Umesh Yadav has been a fine proponent of pace bowling in India with his reverse swing being a solid differentiator in most of the home Test matches.

As a matter of fact, since his debut, no seamer in the history of cricket has picked up more wickets than Umesh (96) in India at a better average (24.54) and strike rate (45.7).

That easily tells the impact that the Vidarbha pacer has on the team and the management will be eager to have him in the side.

However, that will be subject to his fitness level and if he passes the test which will be conducted in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

“Umesh’s fitness test will happen in a couple of days time,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on Friday.

Toss up between Umesh and Siraj

With Bumrah returning for the third Test and Ishant was put under minimal workload in the second Test, now the toss-up is between Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj.

Siraj was impressive in Chennai and of course, in Australia, but it will take a lot to keep someone like Umesh Yadav out of the side, especially when he possesses such an enviable record.
