India vs England : Sunil Gavaskar criticises English experts for ‘unplayable pitch’ remarks

Sunil Gavaskar has stated that the Chepauk pitch for the second Test was, in no way, unplayable and few experts are necessarily creating a narrative to hide England’s frailties.

After England were bundled out for a paltry 134 in the first innings, in reply to India’s 329, all hell broke loose and England cricket fans and former cricketers started putting the blame squarely on the kind of pitch dished out for the Test. The major narrative revolved around why playing on a spinning deck is a lottery, something that hasn’t gone down too well with Sunil Gavaskar.

The Little Master stated that the pitch is “not unplayable” at all, as Rohit Sharma scored a brilliant 161 in the first innings with Indians having to face little problem in the second dig.

“We saw how Rohit Sharma got 150 (161), and yesterday he was getting close to the ball and batting. This criticism (on pitch) is pretty unwarranted,” Gavaskar said during a conversation with former England cricketer Mark Butcher on Star Sports.

“Some of them are saying that — but you have a seaming pitch in England, Australia get dismissed for 46, the ball keeps seeming all throughout (but) no one talks about that. It’s always about Indian pitches; and when the ball starts to turn, people pose a problem,” added Gavaskar.

Gavaskar asks people to stop complaining

Gavaskar further asked the English fans and people who are complaining about the pitch to stop doing that and focus on getting better to play spin bowling.

“One or two, who we know don’t like India, who don’t like England. So they (will) always be having a go at India and England, that’s fine. We ignore them because we know the double standards. But basically, we saw with Rohit Sharma’s innings (that) if pitch was impossible, nobody would have scored 330,” said the former India captain.

“It’s not unplayable. It’s a challenging pitch, and that’s what cricket should be about. In the first Test, on the first two days, when nothing was happening, people were saying ‘it’s boring, nothing is happening. It’s so easy to bat.’ So there has to be a bit of balance between what is said. You cannot be complaining all the time,” he added.
