WATCH: Indian-origin player takes a hat-trick in Big Bash League 2021-22

Not a lot of Indian origin cricketers have gone a long way in Australia, but Gurinder Sandhu has managed to make his mark over the years. Having become the only cricketer to pick two hat-tricks in List A cricket in Australia, Sandhu added a third professional hat-trick to his tally on Thursday.

In the game between Sydney Thunder and Perth Scorchers, Sandhu picked up a hat-trick across two overs. He first got rid of  Colin Munro off the final ball of the 12th over during Scorchers’ first innings. The Kiwi batter mistimed a lofted shot and hit it straight to extra-cover.

He took the ball again in the 16th over to get rid of Aaron Hardie and Laurie Evans to complete a treble. While facing the hat-trick ball, Evans went for a wild swing and top-edged it behind the wicket, where the keeper was wary of the swirl before completing the catch.

Three wickets off three consecutive deliveries has been a rare feat in Big Bash League history, with just 4 bowlers doing it in the past. Xavier Doherty was the first-ever cricketer in this tournament history to perform a hat-trick (in 2012/13) while representing the Hobart Hurricanes. Andrew Tye became the second person to do (2016/17) so a few years later, and soon, he became the first cricketer to pick 2 hat-tricks in BBL (2017/18).

Rashid Khan of the Adelaide Strikers and Haris Rauf for Melbourne Stars are the other cricketers who have achieved it before.

The Scorchers are having an outstanding tournament, with their only defeat before Thursday coming in the reverse fixture of today’s clash. Back on that day, Sam Billings made a stunning half-century to propel Thunder to a fantastic 34-run win, whilst Sandhu did the damage in this fixture. He returned with figures of 4/22, restricting Scorchers to just 133 runs in their 18 overs (rain interruption reduced the game to 18 overs per side).
