After the highs of Lord’s, it all went downhill for the Indian team on Day 1 of the third Test against England at Headingley this Wednesday (August 25). Batting first after winning the toss, the Virat Kohli led side suffered one of their worst batting collapses in recent years.

Fans could reminisce the horrors of ’36 all out’ at Adelaide as India went from 58 for 4 at lunch to 67/8 just shortly after the break against some quality bowling from England and were ultimately bowled out for just 78.

The struggles on a moist, seaming deck in Leeds were evident, with England seamers inducing repeated errors and eventually running through the visitors’ batting unit.

Two dreadful reviews sum up India’s misery at Headingley.

India use up two poor reviews amid the Headingley collapse

The problems were best captured by a dramatic collapse post lunch where India lost four wickets without a run added to the board and even used up two disastrous reviews.

0 runs for four wickets: India’s horror show headlined by two dreadful reviews

These two reviews summed up India’s misery as they were left taking desperately hopeless chances despite both being plumb LBW calls by the on-field umpires.

The first one was that of tailender Jasprit Bumrah, who opted to send the matter upstairs even as the on-field umpire raised his finger in a flash after a delivery from left-arm paceman Sam Curran hit him halfway up his frontpad and looked like hitting the leg-stump. The review only confirmed that belief, throwing light on how desperate the review really was.

Talking of desperate and hopeless reviews, the second one from India’s last recognised batter Ravindra Jadeja was even worse. Jadeja, batting on 4 at the time, was hit on his back leg by Curran off a full pitched delivery which he tried to play through the on-side. And, as was imminent, the review taken by Jadeja only ended up making him look like a fool.
