IPL 2020: CSK vs SRH Game Plan 1 – Should SRH play Sandeep or Kaul?

The fourteenth match of the IPL 2020 tournament between the blockbuster teams, Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad, could all be about match-ups. We take a look at a key game plan that could play a role in the fourteenth game of IPL 2020 – CSK vs SRH.

CSK vs SRH Game Plan 1 – The Left-arm angle that could backfire

Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last two matches have used two different left-arm bowlers, Khaleel Ahmed and T Natarajan. While it worked to an extent in the last game against Delhi Capitals, playing two left-armers against Chennai Super Kings might not be the wisest idea. Since 2018, no batting team has a better average against left-arm seamers than CSK and they score at 9.02 rpo against them as well.

A major factor in the franchise’s success against this type of bowling is the way Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni have dominated them. Rayudu has scored 102 runs for one dismissal at a decent 8.05 runs per over, while Dhoni has scored 187 runs and scored at 13.05 runs per over at an average of 93.5. Shane Watson is the only one in CSK’s top five who struggles against left-arm pace. Although he has a respectable average of 44.3, he scores at just 6.44 runs an over.

Khaleel Ahmed has bowled a total of 7 overs this season and has an economy rate of 10.14 so far, to go with just two wickets. In a pace attack containing the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar and the impressive Natarajan, Khaleel has been the only weak link.

Against CSK, the Hyderabad set-up might consider dropping him for a right-arm pacer, like Sandeep Sharma or Siddharth Kaul. The former impressed in the 2019 season with 12 wickets in 11 innings, while the latter was instrumental in SRH reaching the finals in 2018, and was their joint-leading wicket-taker that year.

Both Sandeep and Kaul have put in good performances for the Hyderabad-based franchise in the past few years, and hence either one could get a game in place of Khaleel Ahmed, who has underperformed thus far and is not a good match-up against the Super Kings.
