IPL 2020: RR vs SRH Game Plan 1 – The Jofra-sized Threat for SRH top-order

RR vs SRH – The fortieth match of the IPL 2020 tournament between the teams, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, could all be about match-ups. We take a look at a key game plan that could play a role in the fortieth game of the IPL – RR vs SRH

There is always a luxury for a captain to have someone who he can go to for providing breakthroughs at any stage of the game. For Rajasthan Royals and Steve Smith, that bowler is Jofra Archer. Having picked 13 wickets in the season so far, Jofra has more often than not been the only one who has looked like picking wickets among the RR bowlers. But even with the over-dependency, the English fast bowler has not failed to deliver.

Archer has been exceptional in the powerplays, and has constantly kept the batsmen under check. With a dot percent of 64.81%, economy of 4.89 and a few big wickets under his belt, Archer has been difficult to get away with. However, with a lack of penetration from the other end, often teams have looked to just play him out in the powerplays without losing wickets. The death overs numbers are quite surprising though.

The lethal bouncers that Archer is known for continue to be effective this season as well. Though he has not picked many wickets with the bouncer, Archer has used it to build pressure on the batsmen. 85.71% of his bouncers have been dots and just 9 runs have been scored off his 21 bouncers this season.

While bouncers have kept the batsmen in check, the short length and good length deliveries have produced wickets for Archer. 66.80% of his deliveries have been either on short length or on good length with a combined economy of 5.92, showing how consistent Archer has been with his lengths. Moreover, he has picked a wicket every 15.9 balls bowled on short or good length.

Against a top-heavy Sunrisers Hyderabad, Smith might be tempted to go for an extra over from Archer in the powerplays instead of the 2 overs that he usually prefers. For SRH, they will need to find a way to negate the Archer threat. The best option might be to play him out in the powerplays while making sure they do not go into a shell against him as that will only make him even more lethal.
