IPL 2021: Andre Russell reaches 6,000 T20 runs via an unbeaten 45 off 27 for KKR

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) dangerous middle-order batsman, Andre Russell, on Thursday (April 29) achieved a great landmark in his T20 career as he joined the list of batters to have recorded their 6,000th run in the shortest version of the game.

The man from Jamaica entered the IPL 2021 game against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Ahmedabad with 5,991 runs in his T20 career spanning 354 matches at a decent average of 26.62 and a fantastic strike-rate of 169.47. As Andre Russell struck the ninth run of his knock against DC, he reached the 6,000-run mark as a T20 batsman.

Russell, who has been one of the most popular cricketers among franchises in the leagues across the globe, made his debut in T20 cricket back in 2010 and is now among the top 50 run-makers in the history of the format.

Andre Russell’s career tally includes 49 T20Is for the West Indies with 540 runs at an average of 20.00 and strike-rate of 151.26. His inconsistent presence for the Calypso Kings may have had a negative influence on his international T20 numbers. But Russell boasts of a more impressive record to his name in the IPL where he has been an integral member of KKR

The 33-year-old Russell has played 81 matches in his overall IPL career, including matches previously for Delhi Capitals (DC) as well, and has scored 1,680 runs with a strike-rate of 179.29 and an average of 29.47. Andre Russell had his best IPL season in the KKR colours back in 2019 when he struck 510 runs at 56.66 per innings while maintaining a strike-rate of 204.81.

Since then, Russell hasn’t been as prolific with the bat for KKR but the two-time champions have kept their trust on his abilities, especially since he is also a valuable option with the ball and adds to their balance.

Andre Russell arrived in Ahmedabad for the match against DC without any substantial score in his kitty for the IPL 2021. And though the explosive right-hander did fail to get going initially and had only 16 runs from his first 18 deliveries, he picked up pace thereafter and ended with an unbeaten 45 off 27 deliveries, including 2 fours and 4 sixes.

In the final flourish, the moment DC bowlers erred with their execution slightly, Russell was quick to pounce on and deposit the ball out of the park.
