IPL 2021: Andrew Tye returns home; Rajasthan Royals left with only 4 overseas players

Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Sunday (April 25) lost another overseas player for the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as Australian pacer Andrew Tye returned home.

Andrew Tye’s departure from India was confirmed by RR’s Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, in a video posted over the franchise’s official Twitter handle.

During an inside dressing room chat post RR’s impressive victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Mumbai, Sangakkara informed that Andre Tye will be leaving the Indian shores early in the morning on Sunday (April 25).

While it isn’t yet clear why Andrew Tye decided to leave before even the halfway mark of IPL 2021, the tall right-arm paceman joined the list of RR’s overseas recruits missing the annual T20 competition this summer.

Andrew Tye has returned home midway through the IPL 2021.

A few days back, even middle-order batsman Liam Livingstone left RR’s bio-bubble and returned to England due to the excessive bio-bubble fatigue amid restrictions imposed for cricket’s safe continuation due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

And so, with Andre Tye, too, going back home, RR are now left with just four overseas players in their squad, namely Mustafizur Rahman, Chris Morris, Jos Buttler and David Miller.

IPL teams generally have a problem of plenty, but RR are now precariously placed in terms of the available resources. It is difficult to see how the team can manage with just four overseas players for the rest of their IPL 2021 campaign, where the challenge is only harder than in the preceding years.

To avoid the potential spread of the COVID-19, the BCCI and IPL governing council have opted for the caravan system to stage the event, which sees each team play their league stage matches at neutral venues in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Bangalore.

For RR, this has meant having to adjust to a unique set of conditions despite having set themselves up for at least seven matches at their home ground in Rajasthan. RR are languishing in the bottom half of the points table right now with three defeats and two wins in their five matches.

In normal times, RR could’ve spread their net wide in search of potential replacements and get them playing for them as well in the next few days. But with the pandemic leading to stringent SOPs, including a mandatory seven-day quarantine post arrival in India, any overseas personnel coming in for the likes of Stokes, Archer, Livingstone and Andrew Tye will have to first be isolated before they can be ready to take the field.
