The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are often mocked on social media as the “Dad’s Army” for the number of 30+ cricketers present in their side. They aren’t the best fielding unit going around in the IPL, but they rarely put a wrong foot on the field. However, in the first qualifier game between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings, a comical mixup garnered limelight.

Hetmyer clipped Ravindra Jadeja towards the leg side and ran the first one quickly in the 11th over. The attempt for a second was always in the minds of Hetmyer and Pant, but Moeen Ali at mid-wicket inside the circle got to the ball quickly. Upon hearing roars from his fellow fielders to throw it quickly towards the CSK skipper, Moeen Ali picked up, turned around and threw the ball without giving himself the time to aim.

His throw, as a result, was wayward and went from one side of the boundary to the other, through the center of the pitch. It was a bit difficult for the fielder at the point to cover Ali’s throw immediately because of his direction, and it needed Deepak Chahar on the boundary to negate an overthrow boundary.

Amidst the confusion between the two backing-up fielders, Pant and Hetmyer had a comical moment. Both batters looked at each other, confused at the possibility of completing a run and despite walking two steps forward and one step backward on two occasions in a space of 3 seconds, they decided eventually to not complete the run. As it turns out, the time wasted in the confusion could’ve easily been spent at completing it.

Everyone saw the lighter side of things as Moeen Ali raised his arm of apology. “I think a lot of fielders have been a bit sleepy”, commented Harsha Bhogle on air.

Here’s the video of that hilarious mixup between CSK fielders that induced some laughter.

Despite getting off to a poor start, CSK bowlers consolidated things in the middle overs with some tight bowling. Prithvi Shaw‘s quickfire fifty helped them get to 51 runs in 6 overs, but runs started to dry out post the field-restricted overs.
