WATCH: “Still I haven’t left it behind…” – MS Dhoni counters Harsha Bhogle, hints at continuing

Share

There’s something in the air in that Chennai Super Kings camp, that just lets them excel almost every time they walk onto the field. MS Dhoni has pioneered yet another masterclass, taking his side to their 4th IPL crown in 2021, having done so previously in 2010, 2011 and 2018. Under his stewardship, they also won two Champions League T20 titles as well.

Having done so much as a captain for the Indian side and also for the Chennai Super Kings, MS Dhoni potentially was walking out for one final time in IPL today. It was also his 300th T20 game as captain, and the pressure to finish on a high was palpable in the air.

The Chennai Super Kings had just under 200 runs to defend, but Kolkata’s history of chasing big totals in finals was beckoning. Just as MS Dhoni was walking out for the second innings next to the fireworks, there was a sense of finality felt even in the commentary box.

Take a look at the moment when MS Dhoni-led his side onto the field, perhaps for the final time, or so we thought

In the post-match presentation ceremony, Harsha Bhogle raved over MS Dhoni’s title wins and CSK the franchise and ended it all with the big question everyone were waiting for – would he continue next year?

Dhoni, as is norm, reiterated how CSK have to see what works best for them, which players can take them forward for the next decade after their incredible 2008-2021 and Bhogle concluded it by stating that Dhoni can be proud of the “legacy you have left behind for Chennai Super Kings”.

Dhoni, while smiling as Harsha spoke, corrected him quickly – “But still I haven’t left it behind…”

Chennai Super Kings were put in to bat first after Kolkata won the toss earlier. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis provided a stellar start, adding yet another fifty partnership this edition. Robin Uthappa continued his fairytale return and added a crucial 31-run contribution coming in at number 3.

Faf du Plessis scored a 59-ball 86 and Moeen Ali provided a stellar finish, as Chennai scored 192 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Sunil Narine picked up 2 wickets for Kolkata, who otherwise had a forgettable day.

KKR got off to a spectacular start with Venkatesh Iyer and Shubman Gill adding 91 runs for the opening stand. Both openers scored half-centuries but their middle order collapsed like a pack of cards once they perished. Shardul Thakur picked 3 wickets whilst Ravindra Jadeja and Josh Hazlewood picked up 2 wickets each, as the Yellow Army won by 27 runs.
