Punjab Kings (PBKS) have been dealt a massive blow midway through their IPL 2021 campaign, with skipper KL Rahul diagnosed with “acute appendicitis”, an inflammation of the appendix.

PBKS confirmed the development via a statement through their official Twitter handle, stating how Rahul complained of “severe abdomen pain” on Saturday (May 1) night and that he had to be taken to the emergency room for thorough testing.

“KL Rahul complained of a severe abdomen pain last night and after not responding to medication, he was taken to the emergency room for further tests, which revealed that he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis,” the franchise confirmed.

“It (the issue) will be resolved surgically and for safety measures, he (KL Rahul) has been transferred to the hospital for the same,” the statement added.

With the extent of the injury being such that it requires surgery, it is likely that KL Rahul will be out for a considerable period of time and could miss the rest of Punjab’s campaign in the IPL 2021.

It goes without saying how significant Rahul’s imminent absence will be for PBKS as they don’t just lose their captain but also their most consistent batsman.

KL Rahul produced a classy knock of 91 off 57 balls in PBKS’ impressive 34-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their last match. The 28-year-old, who had earned the Orange Cup last season by topping the run-charts in UAE, had collected 331 runs from his 7 innings in the ongoing tournament at a strike-rate of 136.21 and average of 66.20.

Despite facing criticism for his approach in recent years, KL Rahul has been an unfazed anchor for PBKS, who controls the innings from an end with the intent to allow the rest of the batting unit to function properly.

But with KL Rahul not there, it remains to be seen who PBKS will position in his place at the top of the order and even more importantly, at the captaincy helm.

Given that Rahul has been shifted to a nearby hospital outside of PBKS’ bubble, he will have to go through another phase of quarantine before being allowed to rejoin the camp.

Punjab Kings (PBSK) are currently fifth in the eight-team IPL 2021 points table after 3 wins and 4 losses in their 7 matches. The team face Delhi Capitals (DC) in their next fixture in Ahmedabad this Sunday (May 2).
