A look at the team combinations, depth chart, recent form, and the fantasy potential of key players from the Gujarat Titans camp ahead of IPL 2022.

Coach: Ashish Nehra
Captain: Hardik Pandya
IPL 2021 Finish: N/A

Gujarat Titans Team Composition & Combinations:

Gujarat Titans were pretty poor with their strategies at the auction table and it reflects well on their batting order. Shubman Gill will open the batting with Wade likely to partner him. Vijay Shankar will come in at No.3 while Hardik Pandya, the captain of the side is likely to promote himself to No.4 in a weak batting line-up and Miller, A Manohar and Tewatia will form the lower middle-order. The bowling attack will comprise of Rashid Khan, the premium legspinner and two quality pacers in L Ferguson and M Shami. Jayant Yadav or Sai Kishore will fight for the remaining bowling slot.

Who will replace Jason Roy at the top?

Jason Roy was GT’s first choice pick for the opening spot but with him pulling out of the IPL, they’ll be forced to choose one between Wade or Saha. Both provide wicket-keeping value and Wade is a proven performer at the opening position in the BBL while choosing Saha opens up an overseas spot which they can use to strengthen their already strong bowling attack. Wade is the one likely to start considering he’s a left-hander and being a superior batter to Saha.

Will Hardik Pandya promote himself up the order?

Hardik has been out of the Indian side since the 2021 T20 WC to work on his fitness. But with Venkatesh Iyer performing decently in his position, Hardik needs to have a strong IPL with both bat and ball to present his case for national selection. In the past, he has hinted at preferring to bat at a higher spot and the Gujarat Titans setup lacks any solid middle-order batters which might mean we could see him promoting himself up to No.4 this season. He has the power-hitting gears vs spin and pace and should be more than effective in that spot.

Jayant Yadav or Sai Kishore?

Gujarat Titans will have to choose between one out of Jayant Yadav or Sai Kishore, both finger-spinners. Ideally, GT should play them depending of the match-ups on offer but whether their team management rates match-ups remains to be seen. They might also look at filling the slot with a local new ball pace option to get maximum out of Ferguson as a middle-overs enforcer.

Gujarat Titans Fantasy Cheat Sheet

STUD

Players who have proven themselves to be top-scoring fantasy players and are popular.

Rashid Khan – The No.1 legspinner in the world will benefit more in the presence of a middle-overs enforcer in Lockie Ferguson alongside him. Since 2018 IPL, he averages 37 Dream11 bowling points per game and crosses the 50-point mark once every 3 games.

BANKERS

The players who provide good value for their credits and can be banked upon for consistent returns.

Matthew Wade – A consistent run-getter at the opening position in the BBL, Wade should find it easy here in the same role. But if GT decides to bat him down the order his fantasy value will drop sharply. He provides additional value with his wicket-keeping. He averages a healthy 37 Dream11 batting points per game in all T20s since 2018.

Shubman Gill – While Gill’s low strike rate might affect the team, his ability to accumulate runs in a consistent, low risk manner is beneficial from a fantasy perspective and the presence of a quick starter in Wade should help him take his own time. Since 2018 IPL, he averages 35 Dream11 batting points per game.

Hardik Pandya – As discussed in the team combinations section, if he bats high and starts to bowl, he’s a reliable fantasy pick, Since 2018 IPL, he averages 28 and 15 Dream11 points with bat and ball respectively.

M Shami – He has really upped his game in the past couple of seasons in the IPL and will assume a top-tail bowling role for the Titans. Since 2020 IPL, he averages 38 Dream11 bowling points per game.

L Ferguson – The hit-the-deck pacer from New Zealand is a genuine wicket-taker with the ball and will be the first choice bowler for the death overs. In all T20s since 2020, he averages 32 Dream11 bowling points per game.

SLEEPER

The players who provide decent enough value but is undervalued or is just not a well-known player.

Vijay Shankar – This could be the breakthrough season for him if he gets to bat at the No.3 position. He has largely been used as a lower middle-order batter in the IPL and should enjoy batting at the top. His bowling is unreliable but he could be a good differential pick just for his batting. Since 2018 IPL, he averages only 21 batting points per game which might see a rise if he bats up the order.

RISKY BUSINESS

The players who carry an element of risk with them which may be due to bad form, injury, lack of game time, etc……

Abhinav Manohar – One can’t expect consistency from a young batter in a tough lower middle-order role just in his first season. While he has had success as a finisher in SMAT, IPL is a much tougher environment especially for a lower middle-order batter.

TRAP

The players who seem like good buys, but won’t score enough points to justify their credits or hype.

David Miller – His game against spin is pretty weak and so he’ll play the role of a pace power-hitter down the order where his game-time will be limited to a handful of balls. Since 2018 IPL, he averages only 26 batting points per game.

FLEX

The players whose credit values are less but still provide some decent value thereby helping to balance out the lineup.

Jayant Yadav and Sai Kishore – Both of them don’t offer much wicket-taking value as finger-spinners but their credits are less which should help in balancing your fantasy team.

Opponent Fantasy Value:

Every team is vulnerable to a certain batting type or a bowler type depending on their setup. For example, a batting unit full of right-handers will be vulnerable against left-arm spinners and wristspinners or a bowling attack void of any quality new-ball bowlers will leak runs in the Powerplay and allow the openers to score freely. These vulnerabilities of the team allows certain player types from opponent sides to perform freely against them which can be used to pick those player types from the opponent side in your fantasy team. As far as Gujarat Titans are concerned, you can pick the player types listed below from the opponent side if those player types are available.

  • Wristspinners and Left-arm spinners
  • Enforcers in middle-overs
  • Anchors who can negotiate quality spin
