IPL 2022: BCCI approves addition of 2 new teams

The BCCI held it’s 89th Annual General Meeting on Thursday in Ahmedabad. During the meeting, the BCCI’s governing body ratified the entry of two new franchises in IPL 2022 which would take the total number of teams to 10.

There were several talks of staging a nine-team IPL in 2021, but it is learnt that the time was too short to add one more franchise, increase the number of matches amidst the global pandemic would prove to be a difficult task.

The Indian Premier League was successfully staged this year in UAE from September-November after the covid-19 pandemic disrupted the original schedule. Mumbai Indians, led by Rohit Sharma captured their second consecutive title and fifth overall.

BCCI pushes for T20 Cricket to be included in Olympics

In the other major development, BCCI has backed ICC’s bid for the inclusion of  T20 Cricket at the 2028 Olympics, to be held in Los Angeles. “Look the BCCI is an autonomous body and it would like to maintain it’s autonomy. Our legal team is looking to get a few clarifications. Obviously, Cricket in Olympics is great for the game. Let’s hope we can move in the right direction,” one of the members who attended the meeting said.

Compensation for Domestic Players

It was all decided that all first-class players, both men and women will be compensated for the curtailed domestic season due to the pandemic. The BCCI plans to kick-start it’s domestic season with the Syed Mustaq Ali trophy from January 10.

“The BCCI will give a lump-sum compensation amount to each state unit. Now, they will draw upon their own list and accordingly compensate male and female players,” a board source said.
