IPL 2022 to see these rule changes

The 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL 2022), starting March 26, is set to witness quite a few changes in the playing conditions, according to a report on Cricbuzz. One of them is regarding a franchise’s inability to field a playing eleven due to members being tested positive for COVID-19. Back in the 2021 IPL, the tournament had to be halted midway after the coronavirus entered the team camps after which matches had to be rescheduled.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated that if rescheduling of games isn’t possible, the issue will be taken care of by the technical committee. Earlier, the opponent was being awarded two points if rescheduling of games were not possible.

“Unable to field a team on account of COVID for any match due to having less than 12 players available in the playing XI (of which at least 7 must be Indian) plus 1 substitute fielder.

“The BCCI, at its discretion, will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season. If this is not possible, the issue will be referred to the IPL Technical Committee. The decision of the IPL Technical Committee will be final and binding,” the BCCI said in a statement, Cricbuzz reported.

As per the previous rule, the board “will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season. If this is not possible, the franchise will be deemed to have lost the match with its opponent being awarded 2 points.”

Two DRS for teams per innings in IPL 2022

Recently, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) introduced a law wherein the new batter will be on striker irrespective of whether the striker and non-striker have crossed while a catch is being taken provided it’s not the last ball of the over. The BCCI has brought in the law for the upcoming IPL edition.

“Upon a catch dismissal, irrespective of whether the batsmen have crossed or not the incoming batsman will take the strike, except if it’s the last ball of the over,” the BCCI informed.

The third rule change is the increase in number of Decision Review System (DRS) referrals from one to two per innings.

The BCCI also said that in case a Super Over isn’t possible in the playoffs/final, the team that finished higher in the points table will be declared the winners.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will lock horns in the opening game on March 26 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
