REPORTS: IPL Retention – Teams can retain upto four players

IPL retnetion rules for the mega auction in 2022 ahas been a subject of debate for long. According to a latest report on Cricbuzz, the eight teams will now be allowed to retain upto four players, a maximum of three Indians and a maximum of two overseas players. It is reported that the Board of Cricket Control India (BCCI) and the representatives of the eight franchises came to an agreement regarding the same following the conclusion of the 2021 edition of the IPL.

It is also learnt that a team will be able to retain upto a maximum of two uncapped players.

According to the report, the purse cap will be INR 90 crore. A team choosing to retain four players will have 40-45 percent of their funds left. There will also be an incremental hike of five crores each season.

What happens to the two new teams after the IPL retention?

This affects the proposed two new teams for which BCCI have sent out tenders. They will have lesser elite players to pick from which should have pegged them back in the IPL 2022 auctions. However, a workaround has been arranged if the reports are to be believed. The two new teams will be allowed to pick two-three players outside the auction to get a head start like the other eight teams that can retain their players.

It is unlikely that there will be Right to Match (RTM) cards at the auction to make it fair to the two new teams.

The formal announcements of the rule is expected to come on October 25 in Dubai.
