Islamabad United (PSL 7) – Retentions & Draft Picks:

Islamabad United are the most successful team in the PSL winning the trophy twice in six years. They play an attacking, aggressive and entertaining brand of cricket especially with their batting approach. Last season, they topped the points table winning 8 out of the 10 league games only to falter in the playoffs. They enter this year with a new coach in Azhar Mahmood who takes over from Johan Botha while Shadab Khan continues as the captain.

Ahead of the PSL 7 draft, Islamabad United retained eight players: Hasan Ali, Asif Ali, Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Alex Hales, M Wasim Jnr, Azam Khan and P Stirling. They’ve traded in the talented Azam Khan from the Quetta Gladiators for the powerful, in-form Iftikhar Ahmed. With a core consisting of first choice players and covering almost all bases they went about the process of completing the squad during the draft. They drafted in Colin Munro as their Platinum pick first up and added M De Lange in the Diamond category. Other notable picks were the English left-arm seamer Recce Topley, left-arm spinning allrounders Danish Aziz and Zafar Gohar and the back-up keeper M Akhlaq. In the emerging category, Islamabad first drafted in Mubasir Khan, the Player of The Tournament in the 2021 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and added the U-19 pacer Zeeshan Zameer and right arm pacer, Athar Mahmood.

Islamabad United (PSL 7) – Fantasy Cheat Sheet

Islamabad United (PSL 7) – Stud

The players who provide good value for their credits and can be banked upon for consistent returns.

Alex Hales: The highest run-getter in T20s since 2020, he was going through a bit of a rough patch since The Hundred but he turned it around in the BBL scoring 383 runs from 13 matches.  He has been consistent in the PSL too scoring 511 runs from 16 games at an average of 34,1.

Hasan Ali: The second highest wicket-taker in PSL history, Hasan Ali strikes at 16.7 in all T20s. He’s also a destructive hitter down the order thus elevating his fantasy value.

Islamabad United (PSL 7) – Bankers

The players who provide good value for their credits and can be banked upon for consistent returns.

Colin Munro: He’s coming off a title win in the BBL and while he wasn’t at his best he was fairly consistent scoring 390 runs at an average of 43.33. He isn’t new to PSL either having had 200+ run seasons in the last couple of seasons.

Marchant de Lange: He hasn’t played in the PSL before but he’s coming off a successful T10 in terms of wickets. He’ll most likely bowl during the mid-overs and death which is suited to his style of bowling.

Islamabad United (PSL 7) – Risky Business

The players who carry an element of risk with them which may be due to bad form, injury, lack of game time, etc……

Paul Stirling: The Ireland opening batsman has enjoyed success in almost all his T20 franchise stints so far. He’s a high intent opening batter who likes to take the attack onto the bowler. Aggressive batting comes with its own element of risk which isn’t reliable for fantasy cricket.

Mohammad Wasim Jnr: He started as an emerging player last year but has now elevated himself to a key player in the squad. He recently impressed everyone in the Windies T20I series with his pace and skills but he’s still quite raw to expect consistent performances day in and day out.

Islamabad United (PSL 7) – Boom or Bust

A player who could perform one of two ways in a season: really well or really poorly.

Azam Khan: He’s a talented batsman who can take on spin to cleaners but he has been largely inconsistent so far in the PSL. While the change in franchise might bring in some change to his batting, No.4 is quite a tough role for a young batter to crack. He’s going to be the first choice wicketkeeper unlike in Gladiators.

Islamabad United (PSL 7) – Trap

A player who looks like a good buy, but won’t score enough points to be of much use.

Shadab Khan: He did enjoy a good T20 WC with the ball in conditions that assisted him but the tracks in Pakistan aren’t as spin-friendly as the ones in UAE and Shadab has struggled for control on similar tracks in the BBL. His batting is effective only if he comes up the order.

Islamabad United (PSL 7) – Sleeper

The players who provide decent enough value but is undervalued or is just not a well-known player.

Asif Ali: He showed some great form in the T20WC yet he’s a bit undervalued in fantasy cricket which might be his batting spot and the lack of a secondary skill. However, he has always batted at his best in the Islamabad United jersey scoring 870 runs from 45 innings for them.

Faheem Ashraf: He’s quite an underrated player from a fantasy perspective. He gets some handy wickets in the Powerplay and in the absence of Talat in the batting lineup, he might enjoy some extended batting time.

Islamabad United (PSL 7) – Flex

Mubasir Khan: He’s likely the first choice pick for the United from the Emerging Players category. While his batting still needs some work for the T20 format, he’s handy with his offspin.
