RCB skipper Virat Kohli, who played a captain’s knock of 90 not out against CSK last night to help his team script a 37-run win, credited the Super Over against Bumrah in RCB’s clash against the Mumbai Indians earlier this IPL for his return to form.

Kohli said, “Before that, I was trying to do too much and putting too much pressure on myself, taking focus away from what I need to do – watch the ball and bat. Sometimes you forget you’re only a player out there, and the responsibility then kicks in.

“If you think too much about responsibility, you get burdened and you don’t play as a player. Your skills are also required for your team’s success. That Super Over where I had to strike every ball, else we would have lost, really opened my mindset. And then I started enjoying training, enjoying batting.

“Those next few sessions, that next game was very good from a batting point of view. I was hitting the ball well in the last game as well. I wanted to try and do the exact same thing today.”

Kohli then talked about how he structured his knock last night. He said, “At 34 off 30, I had set myself up well, I guess. When you’re not scoring at less than a strike rate of 100, you’re always in the game with a couple of big overs and then you capitalise. We spoke during the second timeout that 140-150 would be a good total. But we ended up getting more than that.

Virat Kohli plays an unorthodox Cricket shot on his way to an unbeaten knock of 90 off 52 balls

“It was a tricky pitch. It’s about understanding the conditions and respecting the game. When you don’t get too far ahead of the game, the game rewards you in the end with something extra and that can push you and the team forward.

“Instead of trying to hit every ball into the second tier of the stadium, it is important to be respectful of the game. That’s what experience is. Having played so much cricket, especially T20 cricket, I have learnt that if you are set at the death, you can capitalize big time.”

Kohli was very pleased with his team’s overall performance against CSK last night, terming it as their most complete performance in this year’s IPL. He said in the post match presentation, “It was one of our most complete performances. We got into a bit of a tricky position in the first half. From there on, we pushed forward. Really pleased to get two points. We have back-to-back games coming up, so it was important to build momentum.”
