WATCH: Jasprit Bumrah bowling with a different action in under-19 cricket

Jasprit Bumrah has one of the most strangest actions in world cricket today. The hyperextension of his elbow has often been a topic of discussion in cricketing circles and it has helped him become the bowler he is today.

However, Bumrah did not always have this action. Footages from his under-19 cricketing days show him bowling with a very different bowling action although the run up is more or less similar.

A few on social media compared it to a right-handed Mohammad Amir with the hyperextension of his elbow notably missing in this.

In a conversation with Dinesh Karthik recently, Bumrah had said that he had learned cricket off TV and did not have any formal coaching.

“I learned cricket from watching television. I didn’t get any formal coaching so I used to copy everybody’s actions,” Bumrah said. “This did not come naturally but later on, I don’t know what jumbled up and I ended up with this one. But it didn’t give me a lot of pain in the body so I thought, ‘Okay if it’s not troubling me, I’ll use it to my advantage.”

“I was lucky that wherever I went, the coaches didn’t try to tamper with it and only advised me to work on my body and everything else will be taken care of. I tried to keep things simple that if there’s some physical discomfort, and I am not able to execute what I want to, then only I need to change things,” Bumrah said in the conversation.

The action is a major part of who Bumrah is today with his unique release angle creating different ways to attack batsmen.
