It’s not easy being Virat Kohli, not least in press conferences. After a thumping innings defeat in the hands of England at Headingley in Leeds on day four, Kohli walked into the press conference, only to be greeted by a series of difficult questions from journalists.

The most significant of them was perhaps a question, that was more or less an advice for Indian batters.

A journalist asked Kohli if India did not show as much intent as England with the bat and whether playing on the back foot more often would be part of the discussion going forward in the series.

Kohli seemed puzzled by the question and dodged it initially stating he wasn’t sure how to answer it, but later questioned, albeit in a nice fashion, the journalist, asking him if the balls are bowled on a fullish length, how the batsmen were supposed to go and play on the back foot.

Not satisfied with the response, the journo persisted and pointed out to the Indian skipper that even “when there was an opportunity to go on the back foot, India seem to be missing out on a lot of runs”.

Kohli, visibly peeved at the response, maintained his calm and retorted with an “okay, thanks”.

Kohli later refuted the suggestion that India should extend their batting line-up with an additional batter by pointing out that this was India’s template.

“You could say that we don’t have enough batting depth, but the top order has to give enough runs to the lower middle order to step up. The lower order can’t bail the team out all the time. We don’t have much other than the batting in the second innings to take from this game in terms of positives,” Kohli said.
