Watch: Lockie Ferguson repeats Boult heroics; hits a six to win the match

The New Zealand Super Smash T20 tournament produced another sensational close encounter, and this time, it was Lockie Ferguson producing the finishing touch, just the way Trent Boult did. Auckland were taking on Central Districts on Monday, a game that went right down the wire and required some spectacular hitting.

Auckland were chasing 169 runs and needed 9 runs to win off the last over. Joey Field was bowling for the Central Districts and had done a decent job in the first four deliveries, conceding just 4 runs. It seemed like the game was slipping away from the chasing side, who had Martin Guptill and Lockie Ferguson in the middle.

Ferguson was on strike on the fifth ball, who had come out to bat only in that over. Field bowled a slower delivery on the legs, which was flicked by Ferguson and it went all the way over the boundary. Incidentally, this was an action replay of the famous Grant Elliott six which he hit in the 2015 World Cup semifinal. On both occasions, Elliott and Ferguson’s moments were described by Ian Smith in the commentary box.

Here’s that Lockie Ferguson winning six which was reminiscent of Elliott and Boult’s moments

Martin Guptill was adjudged player of the match for registering a 58-ball 79, and remained unbeaten in the run chase. They also had a crucial contribution coming from Ben Horne, who chipped in with a 9-ball 27. This wasn’t the only game that went all the way down to the final few moments.

A few days ago, Northern Districts had a similar win against the Canterbury Kings. They needed 6 runs to win off the final ball with Trent Boult on strike, and the left-arm pacer managed to hit a six off that final delivery. Northern Districts had to chase just 108 runs to win, but took the game down the wire, which was eventually finished off by Boult.
