3 London Spirit Players who could end up with most wickets in The Hundred Men’s Competition 2021

Based at the iconic Lord’s ground, team London Spirit feature some big names in their bowling attack for the inaugural edition of The Hundred, starting July 22. Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Nabi, Mark Wood are among the notable inclusions to the Spirit’s squad for the maiden 100-ball competition.

London Spirit have a good mix of spinners and pacers available to them, which would help cover up all bases when they approach their strenuous eight-game league stage campaign. While they would have the luxury of playing four games at their base venue, the Spirit will have to travel around England for the rest of the campaign.

Since the new 100-ball format makes it necessary for batsmen to use the long handle from almost ball one, the bowlers will be under even more pressure to try and withstand the onslaught and keep the damage down to limited proportions.

It won’t be any different for London Spirit, who also will depend heavily on their attack to bail them out on what are expected to be some really flat pitches. But who among their bowlers could not just restrict the run-scoring but also chip away at the wickets with the best frequency?

London Spirit bowlers who could end as The Hundred’s highest wicket-taker

1. Mohammad Amir

Left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir will be approaching The Hundred stint with London Spirit carrying the aim of redemption after being left out of the Pakistan setup last year. Amir may not be the bowler he was when he first burst onto the scene, but can still be pretty handful with the use of the left-arm angle and ability to generate swing and seam movement.

Amir has an impressive international and domestic T20 record to his name. He has taken 59 wickets from 50 outings for Pakistan with an economy rate of 7.02, besides 221 wickets in his overall T20 career from 193 innings while conceding 7.15 runs per over.

2. Mason Crane

Leg-spinner Mason Crane could be another candidate among London Spirit bowlers to finish as The Hundred’s top wicket-takers. Crane will be entering the maiden 100-ball competition with some reasonably good form behind him in the T20 Blast this season. The Hampshire spinner has taken 12 wickets from 8 Blast outings while going for a respectable 7.76 runs per over.

Crane has an impressive overall domestic T20 record with 54 scalps from 43 innings at an average of 20.85 and an economy rate of 7.21. He will be eyeing strong performances for London Spirit, which might also bring him back in England selectors’ reckoning.

3. Mohammad Nabi

A darkhorse in the race for the numero uno spot among London Spirit bowlers could be Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi. Nabi is regarded as one of the most miserly T20 spinners around, with an economy rate of only 7.20 after 81 international games for Afghanistan and just 6.94 in his overall career domestically.

Wickets often elude Nabi, who tends to create pressure at one end and force batsmen to take risks at the other, helping his teammates chip away, but a look at his record suggests he hasn’t been that inactive in the wickets column as well. He has taken 72 wickets for Afghanistan and has made 284 scalps in his overall T20 career.
