WATCH: Manish Pandey’s superb direct hit that resulted in a Super Over in the Syed Mushtaq Ali game

Manish Pandey is hailed as one of the best fielders in the country, with Indian fans regularly witnessing his acrobatic exploits on the field while playing for India, or in the Indian Premier League. He is no less brilliant when he dons the Karnataka jersey in domestic cricket, and a testament to his class was his direct throw on Thursday that induced a super over out of nowhere.

Karnataka were taking on Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021/22 quarterfinal, where the game headed into the final over with the Bengal unit requiring 19 runs in the final over.  Vidhayadhar Patel conceded 2 sixes to Ritwik Choudhary off the first two balls, before a boundary from Akash Deep got the game within Bengal’s control heading into the final ball of the game.

They needed just one run to win the contest, and Akash Deep nudged a well-directed yorker towards the short-cover fielder, skipper Manish Pandey. He picked up the ball in lightning-quick speed and dismantled the stumps at the non-striker’s end with a stellar throw.

Pandey wheeled away in celebration as the game headed into the super over. KC Cariappa took on the responsibility for Karnataka with the super over, and picked up 2 wickets in 4 balls to end Bengal’s pursuit with the bat. They managed just five runs, and the captain came out to finish the game with a huge six for Karnataka.

Here’s the video of that throw from Manish Pandey.

Bengal won the toss earlier in the day, and decided to bat first. Karnataka managed to put up 160 runs on the board, with contributions crucial coming from Karun Nair and Rohan Kadam, including a strong finish from Abhinav Manohar. Manish Pandey was a bit underwhelming with the bat, and managed 29 runs in 34 balls.

Shreevats Goswami’s stellar start, Writtick Chatterjee’s half-century and the late exploits of Ritwik Chowdhary seemed to have taken Bengal home, but Karnataka managed to find a way through. They will face Vidarbha in the semifinal which will take place after the game between Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad on Friday.
