MS Dhoni feels there is a chance he might be leaving Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the end of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni recognises it is not certain whether he will be retained by the franchise with whom he been associated since the inception of the IPL.

Speaking after the toss for CSK’s last league stage encounter in Dubai against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Thursday (October 7), the legendary captain and wicketkeeper-batter gave an interesting response when asked by anchor Danny Morris whether fans will see him play next year in CSK’s yellow jersey or not?

“Well you can see me in yellow, but whether I’ll be playing for CSK there are a lot of uncertainties around it,” Dhoni left a shock bomb there, before explaining why him playing for CSK next year as well is not certain.

Will CSK get to retain MS Dhoni for IPL 2022.

MS Dhoni talks on possibility of leaving CSK before IPL 2022

Forever a pragmatist, the great man said he is not 100% certain if he will be playing for CSK in IPL 2022 “for a simple reason that we have two new teams coming up. We don’t know the retention policy. We don’t know how many foreigners, Indian players we can retain, the money cap that every player will be cutting from the kitty. So there are a lot of uncertainties.”

Dhoni said unless the exact details of the retention ahead of next year’s mega auction are made official, “you (as a team) can’t really decide that (individuals to retain). So we will wait for it to happen and hopefully, it will be good for everyone.”

It is being speculated that even with the inclusion of two new teams to the IPL roster, the BCCI will allow existing teams to make at least two retentions each in the Indian and overseas categories.

If that is indeed the case, Dhoni looks set to be the first name in their retention list as skipper and the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter, even as there are question marks being raised from certain corners on the 40-year-old extending his career despite diminishing returns with the bat.

But CSK have shown this year they aren’t dependent on Dhoni the batter like they used to be, while he still adds immense value for them with his undoubted captaincy credentials. That CSK could get back on their feet quickly after last year’s disastrous first-round exit has a lot to do with their captain and his influence.

CSK became the first team to reach the playoffs last week when they clinched their ninth win from twelve matches. Despite loss in the previous game to Delhi Capitals (DC), the three-time champions are second in the points table and could finish at the top of the pile if they defeat PBKS convincingly and DC lose their last game.
