The game of cricket has been brought to a halt for various reasons over the years. Usually, it’s the bad weather. But have you ever heard of play getting suspended because of a burnt toast of bread? Yes, a burnt piece of bread. Ask Nathan Lyon and he may offer an apologetic grin about it.

The Australian off-spinner, easily one of the world’s best contemporary Test bowlers, was once involved in a strange incident that led to the suspension of play during a Sheffield Shield encounter.

Playing for New South Wales against Queensland back in 2017, Lyon and a burnt toast – yes, you read it right again – triggered a pause on proceedings at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

When Nathan Lyon and his burnt toast of bread forced suspension of play in Sheffield Shield

At the sidelines of the game, with NSW batting, Nathan Lyon decided to make a toast for himself. But the spinner got so busy watching the on-field action from the change room, that he completely forgot about the toast.

With the smoke soon coming out of the toast machine, the fire alarm at the ground was set off. There was a delay of about 30 minutes in the game because of the badly cooked toast and the smoke that was around.

The play resumed finally when the fire engines arrived. When approached, Lyon had to make a confession that must’ve embarrassed him and surely left the rest of the players in splits.

It was one of the funniest reasons why a cricket match could potentially be put on a halt.

The resumption of play helped NSW wipe out the rest they required for a victory in the final innings and secure a win by six wickets.

Nathan Lyon is one of the world’s best spinners in Test match cricket, with 399 scalps from 100 matches at an average of 32.12.
