‘Bring Bangladesh over to play the Ashes’ – Fans go gaga over Bangladesh’s historic Test win over New Zealand

Bangladesh created history on Wednesday morning, rolling New Zealand over for 169 and setting themselves up to chase just 40 runs in the final innings at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui in the first Test of the two-match series.

For a side that has only won five away Test matches in its history (and first outside Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and West Indies), this is a phenomenal result and arguably one of the biggest upsets in the history of Test cricket. This was a No.9 ranked ICC Test side beating a No.2 ranked ICC Test side (and current World Test Championship champions) in an away Test match. Few wins in the history of Test cricket can be labelled a bigger upset.

For New Zealand, it brings an end to their eight-series winning run at home since 2017. They last lost a Test match at home in 2017! An Asian team (Pakistan) last beat them at home in 2011. There have only been six wins for Asian teams in New Zealand prior to this in the 21st century.

The magnitude of Bangladesh’s win cannot be overstated and the reactions on social media also suggest fans are well and truly aware of the historic moment created by the Tigers in New Zealand in the first NZ v BAN Test.

WATCH: Bangladesh make a case for worst ever DRS review

This was Bangladesh’s first win over New Zealand in New Zealand in any format and it could not have been better. The world champions, basking in an exceptional home record in the last four years were given a rude reality Test as Bangladesh bossed them across all five days to force a sensational result. If this isn’t the biggest upset you’ve seen in your lifetime in Test cricket, you’re definitely old.
