Match 38 of the IPL 2021 between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) got off to a frenetic start. There was drama on show in the very first over where young KKR opening batter Shubman Gill survived an on-field LBW call after hitting a couple of fantastic boundaries but was out run-out via a direct throw on the next ball.

Having rotated the strike with his in-form batting partner Venkatesh Iyer from the first two balls, Gill pounced on two scoring opportunities against CSK pacer Deepak Chahar. The elegant right-hand batter struck Chahar for successive fours on the third and fourth ball of the over.

For the first one, Shubman Gill danced down the ground and hit Chahar for a four through mid-off and then screamed a delivery wide outside off-stump through the cover region.

The fifth ball saw Chahar nearly take his sweet revenge as he hit Gill’s front pad in line with the leg-stump and made an appeal so convincing that the umpire raised his finger. But the DRS review taken by the Indian young gun confirmed that the ball was sailing over the stumps and the decision was reversed to ‘not out’.

Shubman Gill’s innings against CSK ended with a disappointing run-out.

Shubman Gill gets out run-out after a direct hit from Ambati Rayudu

Shubman Gill was made to do a long walk back to the pavillion on the last ball of Deepak Chahar’s over, thanks largely CSK fielder Ambati Rayudu who took advantage of the bad mix-up between the two batters.

Nudging a ball on his body to the right of Rayudu, who was fielding at the short mid-wicket, Gill called Iyer for a quick run. But Iyer recognising the risk involved, turned down the request and asked his partner to go back.
