Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have received a major jolt in the build-up to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, with two of their prominent overseas first XI picks set to miss the initial week of the tournament.

Middle-order stalwart Glenn Maxwell and lead pacer Josh Hazlewood will not be available for selection for the first week of the IPL 2022 because of the eligibility date set in Cricket Australia’s NOCs issued to their IPL stars.

While the dates and venues for the IPL 2022 are not yet officially out, it is understood that the tournament is due to kick off on March 26 or 27 in India. As per the NOCs issued by CA, the Australian players set to take part in IPL 2022 can only be eligible to play from April 6 – the day after the historic tour of Pakistan concludes.

RCB will be without Maxwell and Hazlewood for initial matches of IPL 2022.

The perk of the rule is such that Maxwell, who skipped the tour of Pakistan due to his wedding next month, and Hazlewood, rested from the white-ball leg of the trip, can play for RCB only after missing their earlier league stage matches.

Maxwell emerged as RCB’s only overseas retention for a sum of INR 11 crores along with their Indian recruits, former skipper Virat Kohli (15 crores) and promising quick Mohammed Siraj (7 crores).

At the mega auction in Bangalore, the popular franchise made a valuable addition in the form of Hazlewood for INR 7.75 crores. The pacer was expected to shepherd RCB’s young, inexperienced pace attack, including Siraj and Harshal Patel as the Indian incumbents.

But the two cricketers will now require adequate backups and replacement for the initial few matches as RCB look to make a swift start to the campaign without them.

Pat Cummins and David Warner are two other big-name Aussie picks set to miss the initial few matches of IPL 2022 despite being rested from the three ODIs and a standalone T20I versus Pakistan. The two cricketers will move to India after the Test series but will not take immediate part in the IPL because of the NOC regulations in play.

Cummins was repurchased by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for INR 7.25 crores, while Warner had been picked at the bidding war by Delhi Capitals (DC) at a steal price of INR 6.25 crores.

DC will have to make do without allrounder Mitchell Marsh, too, for those initial few games because of his presence in the Pakistan series. Another Aussie allrounder Marcus Stoinis will be a big miss for Lucknow Super Giants, who had signed him for INR 9.2 crores before the mega auction.
