Reports emerging of postponement of T20 World Cup are inaccurate: ICC

110

It seems like the reports emerging about the postponement of the T20 World Cup to be held this year have turned out to be false, as the ICC released a statement a few moments ago, which said,
“No final decision was taken regarding the election process and the subject will be discussed further at the next ICC Board meeting on Thursday. The existing Chair confirmed he was not seeking any extension to his term but would support the Board to ensure a smooth transition.
Additionally, reports of a postponement of the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 are inaccurate and planning for the event continues whilst a number of contingency plans are being explored in light of the rapidly changing public health situation caused by the COVID 19 virus.”

There were rumours about an official saying that the ICC were considering shifting the T20 World Cup to 2022, and discussions were to be held about the same tomorrow, via a conference call among the Board members.

“We are expecting three options from the ICC Events Committee. First option is having World T20 as per schedule with 14-day quarantine with crowd being allowed. The back-up for this option could be tournament in-front of empty stadium. The third option could be shifting the tournament to 2022,” the official, who did not wish to be named, told the PTI.

Other than discussions about postponement of the global tournament, the ICC were also supposed to discuss playing conditions including applying sweat and saliva on the Cricket ball.

According to reports, the Board meeting were to discuss the two month extension for Chairman Shashank Manohar, but primarily the focus was said to be on deciding the future of the T20 World Cup. Now that the ICC have given their verdict on the global tournament, it remains to be seen what decisions do the ICC take regarding the two other issues tomorrow.
