Robin Uthappa was roped into the playing XI by the Chennai Super Kings just a couple of games before the playoffs started, and his first two knocks did not seem to hold any merit. However, the stylish batter turned up with a sensational fifty in Qualifier 1. He continued his brilliance in the final against Kolkata Knight Riders, registering a sensational cameo coming in at number 3.

He walked in to bat after Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis had put up 61 runs for the opening wicket. Just when the KKR bowlers were tightening the screws, Uthappa’s innings helped CSK expand their wings. He hit first six off Shakib Al Hasan in the 10th over, smacking it well over the mid-wicket boundary.

He then chipped in with two similar hits in the same area, this time more around the cow-corner, to smack Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine over the boundary. Chennai had a sensational outing with the bat, and the 35-year-old’s crucial contribution in the middle overs was important to ensure the momentum was not lost.

This could’ve very easily been an innings where the bowling team would take control and perhaps let a little flourish towards the end, ending with a total of 150-160. Uthappa’s positive approach positioned CSK fantastically to head closer to the 200-mark and Moeen Ali did his job later on. Robin Uthappa, who has not been at his best in the IPL for a while, rolled back the clock to the 2014 edition where he was a nightmare to the bowlers.

Faf du Plessis finished just short of Ruturaj Gaikwad in the Orange Cap race, but his 59-ball 86 was crucial in helping Chennai post 192 runs. All four CSK batters chipped in with reasonable contributions, and Moeen Ali’s 20-ball 37 was a fantastic cherry on the cake.
