Sanju Samson has been given the honors to lead Rajasthan Royals in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League after the franchise decided to part ways with Steve Smith.

Steve Smith replaced Ajinkya Rahane as captain in the mid-way through the 2019 IPL and the decision bore instant fruit after Smith salvaged the season for them to an extent. However, the following season, it was not hunky-dory for the Aussie whose captaincy lacked spark.

Thus, the franchise decided to let him go to the auction pool to save the huge purse available and named Sanju Samson as the skipper. The infusion of young blood as well as Samson’s understanding of Royals culture, RR will hope, will work in their favour come the 2021 IPL.

“It’s a team that is so close to my heart, which I’ve been lucky enough to play for over the years, and I’m excited about the challenge that lies ahead of me as the leader of the team,” Samson was quoted as saying by the franchise.

“The Royals have had some wonderful captains over the years and I’m so grateful for all the time I’ve spent working with and learning from great leaders like Rahul Dravid, Shane Watson, Ajinkya Rahane, and Steve Smith. I now cannot wait to get started and look forward to the season ahead.”
