Chaotic scenes in Cape Town – Dropped catch, five penalty runs and an extra ball in the over

The second Test between India and South Africa in Cape Town is turning into an enthralling contest, with both sides delivering a brilliant performance with the ball. Whilst Virat Kohli was the lone warrior with the bat for the Indian side, Keegan Petersen has been carried the hosts with his half-century. There has been no dearth of drama as well, with catches being spilled, warnings being given and extra balls being bowled in an over.

The 50th over of the South African innings, which took place during the second session on Day 2, had every bit of drama that you can expect from Test cricket, or even more so. Temba Bavuma was in the middle alongside Petersen, with Shardul Thakur taking up the duties for India to spice things up in Cape Town.

The over saw a catch being spilled by Cheteshwar Pujara, which rolled its way towards the helmet which was parked right behind the keeper. 5 penalty runs were awarded to South Africa after the ball contacted the helmet, and it just rubbed salt on the Indian wounds.

To make things even more interesting, 7 deliveries were bowled in that over by Thakur with the umpires getting their count wrong. Not many had realised it initially, but the extra ball cost no extra runs, and hence it didn’t become much of a talking point.

Here’s that drop catch that sparked penalty runs for India in Cape Town

India are looking keenly towards getting their first-ever Test win in Cape Town, but they will have to bat incredibly well to set a big target. The Proteas are 47 runs behind at the end of the second session with Keegan Petersen working hard to grind his side a lead. But with Bumrah and Shami, who denied them any possible room to score runs, won’t make it easy in the final session.
