Mohammed Shami, who took a blow on his wrist while awkwardly fending a Pat Cummins bouncer, has now been ruled out of the Test series with a wrist fracture.

It was a disappointing day of Test cricket from an Indian perspective, with the side losing nine wickets for 36 runs despite having a 53-run lead in the first innings. So much so that, in front of the barrage of bouncers from Pat Cummins, it seemed like a struggle for the batsmen.

Shami was visibly uncomfortable right from the beginning and when Cummins got one to shoot up, he wanted to get away from the line. But the ball was fast enough to hit him right on his wrist, which warranted urgent attention.

He was taken to a hospital for scans, which revealed a fracture, as reported by many publications. Later, PTI reported that Shami’s “chances of him taking part in the remaining three Test matches is next to nil”.

Siraj in line to replace Shami

With Virat Kohli missing from the Indian squad for the last three Tests due to the birth of his first child, India are looking a gloomy few days in Australia after Shami’s injury. Mohammed Siraj will be the biggest beneficiary of the injury, with the Hyderabad pacer in line to make his Test debut for the country. Unless the board looks at a left-field solution and adds T Natarajan or Kartik Tyagi to the squad.
